New Study on Ultrasound Screening for Breast Cancer ? CBS St ...

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) - Good, but maybe not worth the risk. That?s the finding of a new study out of Washington University School of Medicine regarding using ultrasound screening for breast cancer.

Lead researcher Dr. Dione Farria says ultrasound screening finds more breast cancer, but the increased risk of false positives may outweigh that benefit. That?s why she says, ?her facility will no longer offer the ultrasound option to high risk women.

?No we will not because we are following high risk women, by adding breast MRI which has a better sensitivity of detecting cancers, and a slightly better false positive rate, ?would be the better test to do and there are studies to support that.? The American Cancer Society supports that in women, who have at least a 20 percent risk of breast cancer.?

Farria?s advice to women ? think twice about ultrasound at this point because the negatives counteract the benefits ? and it takes an expert to read an ultrasound properly which in many cases does not happen.
