Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson described his trip to the NBA All-Star game in Houston, Texas as a success.
The three-time all-star attended the game this time on official city business as he hoped to lobby team owners and other league officials close to a potential relocation of the Sacramento Kings.
Johnson did not have a meeting scheduled with NBA commissioner David Stern or any of the team owners who would ultimately decide the fate of the Kings, but said, ?I will put myself in the path whenever possible.?
?If I run into someone and I know they are an owner, I will do my best to update them on what we are doing in Sacramento,? Johnson said.
A bid to buy and relocate the Sacramento Kings to Seattle has already been filed ahead of the March 1 deadline.
Johnson hopes to announce a counter offer by the same date, as he waits to finalize financing for the plan he calls ?play to win?.
While Stern said Sacramento has an open door to the NBA and will have an opportunity to present a counter offer, he was pleased with the Seattle bid as well.
?There is a great and strong application from a terrific city to bring in a third and possibly fourth team in a brand new building, a well financed ownership group?that?s really good.? If you?re a commissioner you like that,? said Stern.
NBA team owners could approve, deny or delay a decision on the deal at their board of governors meeting on April 18.
