A two-day symposium will explore how much we have learned about new and re-emerging infectious diseases in the two decades since the Institute of Medicine issued a 1992 report pointing to major challenges in detecting and managing disease outbreaks. IOM's Forum on Microbial Threats will bring together top infectious disease researchers and leading public health officials to explore the progress made over the past 20 years and how our understanding of microbial ecology has changed. The event features keynote speakers Anthony Fauci, director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Thomas Frieden, director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The workshop will run from 8 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. EST Tuesday, Dec. 11, and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST Wednesday, Dec. 12, in Room 100 of the National Academies' Keck Center, 500 Fifth St. N.W., Washington, D.C. An agenda and further information are available on the IOM website.
