MCS to create careers program ... - Business Tutorials and News

BY MICHELLE MILLER STAFF WRITER soon Milford Central School will serve as the hub for educational opportunities and career advancement. The district received a $149,700 grant to create the educational program Career Opportunities in Rural Education. The $304,475 project will establish a communitycentered physical and virtual network of adult education courses and career advancement training programs. The program will offer career counseling, educational and business opportunities and financial advice toward reaching personal and career goals. according to Superintendent Peter Livshin, the district is advertising for a director with excellent entrepreneurial, management and public relations skills to get the project up and going. he said the person will need to be a self-starter. ?The goal is to have things running by January or February,? Livshin said. The position is a temporary independent contracted position, and it will be the director?s job to get the program so it is self-sustainable. Susan Ward, board of education president and a key organizer for the program, said the project will be accomplished through multi-generational exposure to career counseling, educational and business opportunities and financial aid advice that leads to the attainment of personal and career goals. Ward said the idea of CORE was conceived and initiated at MCS. The goal is to prepare people of this region to be able to compete in the global economy, she said. ?It?s a unique project because we have identified that there is a real economic principle that can be honed and put into place utilizing the economic principle basically of supply and demand,?? Ward said. MCS will become a site for adult education and continuing education opportunities for a multi-generational audience that wants to re-train for a new career or see what? options are available, sheadded. when first working on a proposal for the project, MCS grant writer and media specialist Lorre Gregory said the need was first recognized during a STEM initiative, with local educators and business people trying to get students more interested in technology, engineering and mathematics. Meetings with? the CDO Workforce, Otsego County Planning Office andthe Otsego County Economic Development Office have also established a need for a program that will be fulfilled through CORE, Gregory said. according to a media release sent by MCS, information technology and entrepreneurship are growing job sectors. The release said CORE will work closely with area employees and focus on STEM jobs with high local demand. CORE will provide not only resources and equipment to offer educational opportunities, but will also develop a partnership with schools, institutions of higher education, regional businesses, civic organizations and communities, according to Ward. A disparity exists in Otsego County between job openings and jobs filled, a document about CORE said, and the gap reflects needs for higher levels of training and education to fill existing jobs and to align skills of local residents with the needs of area businesses. Organizers of the project said business, organizational and educational sectors in the county have indicated support for the project. They said they will seek federal and state grants and support from philanthropic groups and foundations, as well as charge for membership in its Business Partnership Network. ?We are hoping the program will provide a model for other rural communities,? Ward said. Ward said she finds it exciting that the program is getting up and going at the same time President Obama unveiled new economic initiatives to help stir job growth and capital investment in rural America. ?this just shows we might be on the right track,? she said at a recent board of education meeting. Ward said local students will be getting involved by becoming the faces of Job? Zone. Job Zone will be a partof the business initiative of the CORE project, and Ward said they will make videos to help promote colleges. The goal, according to Ward, is to build awareness to students so they don?t feel the need to move to find great jobs.
