Director Ang Lee?s ?Life of Pi,? adapted by screenwriter David Magee from Yann Martel?s fantastical novel, is engaging and fascinating. However, if you?ve already been through your Hermann Hesse period and have a gift for glibly dismissing that which no longer resonates, ?been there, done that? may apply to this foray into Eastern philosophy.
Granted, this is big, expansive, colorful and technically accomplished filmmaking. And yet, though one can?t help emote for the title character who finds himself shipwrecked and holed up with a Bengal tiger in a lifeboat for 227 days, my religious faith remains unaltered. Alas, G-d is still a nice old guy with a long white beard and a Jewish accent.
Pi Patel, splendidly portrayed by four different actors at various stages of his life, would have liked it if I had at least expanded on that belief as a result of the spiritual adventure that begins when his dad decides to sell their zoo in India. The ensuing journey across the Pacific, the devastating storm they encounter and what then follows is all rather trippy.
A combination of sensational cinematography, animatronics and computer razzmatazz makes for a world that flits from real to surreal, with a few gauzy stops between those two conditions. Likewise, the spare but pungent script encompasses an amalgam of styles, ranging from the stuff of Rudyard Kipling to Roald Dahl to the Brothers Grimm.
Now, I can?t speak for your kid. But a gaggle of moppets whose parents figured they?d find this PG offering metaphysically enlightening seemed much more intent on finding a shorter route to the facilities and the concession stand. But be warned, ye who don?t believe in babysitters. The Bengal tiger will scare the bejesus out of anyone south of 8.
Amazing stuff, these electronic scions of yesteryear?s puppetry. When Richard Parker (the tiger?s name, as it is whimsically explained by Pi) bares his teeth in a wide-mouthed growl, I could swear Smell-O-Vision was also an integral part of this film?s technological wonders. I admit to launching from my seat a couple of times, and I?m a little past 8.
Shades of Hitchcock?s ?Lifeboat? (1944) and the film adaptation of Hemingway?s ?The Old Man and the Sea? (1958), life aboard the double-ended skiff in an ocean of unknown perils is at once confining and unbearably desolate. Pi is initially joined by the tiger, a hyena, an orangutan and a zebra. But that soon whittles down to the chief protagonists.
Or, is it antagonists, as the story subtly and philosophically asks? It works on a bunch of levels, with both a Western and Eastern impetus tossed into the grand quandary director Lee astutely poses. And if you?re up for the ruminative exercise, the gray matter will doubtless explore whatever nooks and crannies of the human existence it finds apt.
But again, don?t expect any hard and fast answers or life changing epiphanies. Rather, as the pundits have informed us over the ages, the odyssey is the destination. Viewers with a penchant for the quantitative could feel overly Yin and Yanged at times. What might really throw them is the big surprise at the end. Obscure hint: Think ?Sophie?s Choice.?
That said, the saga is related in the traditional, British armchair style, except that it?s in a Montreal kitchen and over a humble meal where the adult Pi Patel (Irrfan Khan) regales an aspiring author (Rafe Spall) in search of a story with his extraordinary tale. Switching back to these ordinary circumstances helps insure our suspension of disbelief.
Good performances all around, beginning with Ayush Tandon?s 11-year-old Pi telling his dad, played by Adil Hussain, that he wishes to be both a Hindu and a Christian, imbue the work with a personalness that facilitates the yarn?s touching family angle. But Suraj Sharma as the valiant and likable castaway handles the, er, tiger?s share of the acting.
Engaging the muscularly fearsome feline in a war of stamina and wits that intriguingly speculates about the enigmatic relationship between man and beast, Pi brings into high relief both the strength and fragility of our humanity. Chills abound with each of Richard Parker?s multi-clawed swipes, making it hard to believe he is but a blue screen apparition.
To his credit, Ang Lee puts us right in that lifeboat with both parties, awash among the universe?s dangerous uncertainties and great possibilities. At seat?s edge, one second alarmed, the next moment plunged into reflection, round and round you go, just where, it?s hard to know, ironically verifying that ?Life of Pi? will be met by both friend and foe.

Egypt constitution finalized as opposition cries foul
CAIRO (Reuters) - An Islamist-led assembly raced through approval of a new constitution for Egypt on Friday to end a crisis over President Mohamed Mursi's expanded powers, but the opposition said it was an escalation that would only spur more protests.
Mursi said law decree halting court challenges to his decisions, which provoked demonstrations and violence from Egyptians fearing a new dictatorship less than two years after they ousted Hosni Mubarak, was "for an exceptional stage."
"It will end as soon as the people vote on a constitution," he told state television while the constituent assembly was still voting on the draft. "There is no place for dictatorship."
The opposition cried foul. Liberals, leftists, Christians, more moderate Muslims and others had withdrawn from the assembly, saying their voices were not being heard. They have called for big rally on Friday, an eighth day of protests.
Protesters said they would push for a 'no' vote in a referendum, which could happen as early as mid-December. If approved, it would immediately cancel the president's decree.
"We fundamentally reject the referendum and constituent assembly because the assembly does not represent all sections of society," said Sayed el-Erian, 43, a protester in Cairo's Tahrir Square. He is a member of the liberal Dostour (Constitution) Party, set up by prominent opposition figure Mohamed ElBaradei.
The plebiscite is a gamble based on the Islamists' belief that they can mobilize voters again after winning all elections held since Mubarak was overthrown in February 2011.
But it will need the cooperation of judges to oversee the vote, though many were angered by Mursi's decree that they said undermined the judiciary. Some judges have gone on strike.
The assembly concluded the vote after a 19-hour session, approving all 234 articles including presidential powers, the status of Islam, the military's role and the extent to which human rights will be respected in the post-Hosni Mubarak era.
HISTORIC CHANGES
The final draft contains historic changes to Egypt's system of government. It limits to eight years the amount of time a president can serve, for example. Mubarak was in power for three decades. It also introduces a degree of oversight over the military establishment - though not enough for critics.
Mursi is expected to ratify the document by Saturday, allowing a referendum to be held as soon as mid-December on a text the Islamists say reflects Egypt's new freedoms.
"We have finished working on Egypt's constitution," said Hossam el-Gheriyani, head of the assembly in a live broadcast of the session. "We will call the president today (Friday) at a reasonable hour to inform him that the assembly has finished its task and the project of the constitution is completed."
The vote was often interrupted by bickering between the mostly Islamist members and Gheriyani over the articles. Several articles were amended on the spot before they were voted on.
"This is a revolutionary constitution," Gheriyani said, asking members of the assembly to launch a cross-country campaign to "explain to our nation its constitution."
Critics argue it is an attempt to rush through a draft they say has been hijacked by the Muslim Brotherhood, which backed Mursi for president in a June election, and its allies.
Two people have been killed and hundreds injured in the protests since last Thursday's decree, which deepened the divide between the newly empowered Islamists and their opponents.
Setting the stage for more tension, the Muslim Brotherhood and its Islamist allies have called for pro-Mursi rallies on Saturday. But officials from the Brotherhood's party changed the venue and said they would avoid Tahrir Square.
Seeking to calm protesters, Mursi said he welcomed opposition but there was no place for violence. "I am very happy that Egypt has real political opposition," he said.
He said Egypt needed to attract investors and tourists. The crisis threatens to derail early signs of an economic recovery after two years of turmoil. Egypt's benchmark stock index fell on Thursday to a four-month low.
An alliance of opposition groups pledged to keep up protests and said broader civil disobedience was possible to fight what it described as an attempt to "kidnap Egypt from its people."
ISLAMIC REFERENCES
Eleven newspapers plan not to publish on Tuesday to protest Mursi's decree, one reported. Al-Masry Al-Youm, one of Egypt's most widely read dailies, also said three privately owned satellite channels would not broadcast on Wednesday in protest.
The Brotherhood argues that approval of the constitution in a referendum would bury all arguments about both the legality of the assembly and the text it has written in the last six months.
If Egyptians approve the constitution, legislative powers pass straight from Mursi to the upper house of parliament, in line with an article in the constitution, assembly members said.
The draft injects new Islamic references into Egypt's system of government but keeps in place an article defining "the principles of sharia" as the main source of legislation - the same phrase found in the previous constitution.
It caps the amount of time a president can serve at two terms, or eight years. Mubarak ruled for three decades. It also introduces a measure of civilian oversight - not nearly enough for the critics - over the military establishment.
The president can declare war with parliament's approval, but only after consulting a national defense council with a heavy military and security membership. That was not in the old constitution, used when Egypt was ruled by ex-military men.
Activists highlighted other flaws such as worrying articles pertaining to the rights of women and freedom of speech.
"There are some good pro-freedoms articles, but there are also catastrophic articles like one that prevents insults. This could be used against journalists criticizing the president or state officials," said human rights activist Gamal Eid.
A new parliamentary election cannot happen until the constitution is passed. Egypt has been without an elected legislature since the Islamist-dominated lower house was dissolved in June, based on a court order.
"The secular forces and the church and the judges are not happy with the constitution; the journalists are not happy, so I think this will increase tensions in the country," said Mustapha Kamal Al-Sayyid, a Cairo University political science professor.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? This metropolis of 6 million people may be one of the world's most intense, overwhelming cities, with tremendous levels of crime, traffic and social strife. The sounds of Caracas' streets live up to its reputation.
Stand on any downtown corner, and the cacophony can be overpowering: Deafening horns blast from oncoming buses, traffic police shrilly blow their whistles and sirens shriek atop ambulances stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
Air horns routinely used by bus drivers are so powerful they make pedestrians on crosswalks recoil, and can even leave their ears ringing. Loud salsa music blares from the windows of buses, trucks with old mufflers rumble past belching exhaust, and "moto-taxis" weave through traffic beeping high-pitched horns.
Growing numbers of Venezuelans are saying they're fed up with the noise that they say is getting worse, and the numbers of complaints to the authorities have risen in recent years.
One affluent district, Chacao, put up signs along a main avenue reading: "A honk won't make the traffic light change."
"The noise is terrible. Sometimes it seems like it's never going to end," said Jose Santander, a street vendor who stands in the middle of a highway selling fried pork rinds and potato chips to commuters in traffic.
Prosecutor General Luisa Ortega recently told a news conference that officials have started "putting an increased emphasis on promoting peaceful coexistence" by punishing misdemeanors such as violations of anti-noise regulations and other minor crimes. That effort has translated into hundreds of noise-related cases in recent years.
Some violators are ordered to perform community service. For instance, two young musicians who were recently caught playing loud music near a subway station were sentenced to 120 hours of community service giving music lessons to students in public schools.
Others caught playing loud music on the street have been charged with disturbing the peace after complaints from neighbors. Fines can run as high as 9,000 bolivars, or $2,093.

On the streets of their capital, however, Venezuelans have grown used to living loudly. The noisescape adds to a general sense of anarchy, with many drivers ignoring red lights and blocking intersections along potholed streets strewn with trash.
"This is something that everybody does. Nobody should be complaining," said Gregorio Hernandez, a 23-year-old college student, as he listened to Latin rock songs booming from his car stereo on a Saturday night in downtown Caracas. "We're just having fun. We're not hurting anybody."
Adding to the mess is the country's notoriously divisive politics, which regularly fill the streets with marches and demonstrations.
On many days, the shouts of protesters streaming through downtown can be heard from blocks away, demanding pay hikes or unpaid benefits.
And the sporadic crackling of gunfire in the slums can be confused for firecrackers tossed by boisterous partygoers.
It's difficult to rank the world's noisiest cities because many, including Venezuela's capital, don't take measurements of sound pollution, said Victor Rastelli, a mechanical engineering professor and sound pollution expert at Simon Bolivar University in Caracas. But Rastelli said he suspects Caracas is right up there among the noisiest, along with Sao Paulo, Mexico City and Mumbai.
Excessive noise can be more than simply an annoyance, Rastelli said. "This is a public health problem."
Dr. Carmen Mijares, an audiologist at a private Caracas hospital, said she treats at least a dozen patients every month for hearing damage caused by prolonged exposure to loud noises.
"Many of them work in bars or night clubs, and their maladies usually include temporary hearing loss and headaches," Mijares said. For others, she said, the day-to-day noise of traffic, car horns and loud music can exacerbate stress and sleeping disorders.
Several cities have successfully reduced noise pollution, said Stephen Stansfeld, a London psychiatry professor and coordinator of the European Network on Noise and Health.
One of the most noteworthy initiatives, Stansfeld said, was in Copenhagen, Denmark, where officials used sound walls, noise-reducing asphalt and other infrastructure as well as public awareness campaigns to fight noise pollution.
But such high-tech solutions seem like a remote possibility in Caracas, where streets are literally falling apart and aging overpasses regularly lack portions of their guard rails. Prosecutors, angry neighbors and others hoping to fight the noise will have to persuade Venezuelans to do nothing less than change their loud behavior.
For Carlos Pinto, however, making noise is practically a political right.
The 26-year-old law student and his friends danced at a recent street party to house music booming from woofers in his car's open trunk, with neon lights on the speakers that pulsed to the beat.
When asked about the noise, he answered: "We will be heard."

Research discovery could revolutionize semiconductor manufacture
ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? A completely new method of manufacturing the smallest structures in electronics could make their manufacture thousands of times quicker, allowing for cheaper semiconductors. The findings have been published in the latest issue of Nature.
Instead of starting from a silicon wafer or other substrate, as is usual today, researchers have made it possible for the structures to grow from freely suspended nanoparticles of gold in a flowing gas.
Behind the discovery is Lars Samuelson, Professor of Semiconductor Physics at Lund University, Sweden, and head of the University's Nanometre Structure Consortium. He believes the technology will be ready for commercialisation in two to four years' time. A prototype for solar cells is expected to be completed in two years.
"When I first suggested the idea of getting rid of the substrate, people around me said 'you're out of your mind, Lars; that would never work'. When we tested the principle in one of our converted ovens at 400?C, the results were better than we could have dreamt of," he says.
"The basic idea was to let nanoparticles of gold serve as a substrate from which the semiconductors grow. This means that the accepted concepts really were turned upside down!"
Since then, the technology has been refined, patents have been obtained and further studies have been conducted. In the article in Nature, the researchers show how the growth can be controlled using temperature, time and the size of the gold nanoparticles.
Recently, they have also built a prototype machine with a specially built oven. Using a series of ovens, the researchers expect to be able to 'bake' the nanowires, as the structures are called, and thereby develop multiple variants, such as p-n diodes. A further advantage of the technology is avoiding the cost of expensive semiconductor wafers.
"In addition, the process is not only extremely quick, it is also continuous. Traditional manufacture of substrates is batch-based and is therefore much more time-consuming," adds Lars Samuelson.
At the moment, the researchers are working to develop a good method to capture the nanowires and make them self-assemble in an ordered manner on a specific surface. This could be glass, steel or another material suited to the purpose. The reason why no one has tested this method before, in the view of Professor Samuelson, is that today's method is so basic and obvious. Such things tend to be difficult to question.
However, the Lund researchers have a head start thanks to their parallel research based on an innovative method in the manufacture of nanowires on semiconductor wafers, known as epitaxy -- consequently, the researchers have chosen to call the new method aerotaxy. Instead of sculpting structures out of silicon or another semiconductor material, the structures are instead allowed to develop, atomic layer by atomic layer, through controlled self-organisation.
The structures are referred to as nanowires or nanorods. The breakthrough for these semiconductor structures came in 2002 and research on them is primarily carried out at Lund, Berkeley and Harvard universities.
The Lund researchers specialise in developing the physical and electrical properties of the wires, which helps create better and more energy-saving solar cells, LEDs, batteries and other electrical equipment that is now an integrated part of our lives.
Besides Lars Samuelson, the other authors of the article are: Magnus Heurlin, Martin Magnusson, David Lindgren, Martin Ek, Reine Wallenberg and Knut Deppert, all employed at Lund University, except for Martin Magnusson, who works at start-up company Sol Voltaics AB.
About semiconductors Semiconductors are materials that neither conduct electricity as well as metals, nor stop a current as effectively as insulators -- silicon and germanium are two examples. These properties may not sound attractive, but in actual fact they are excellent. The reason is that we can influence the conductive capacity of the materials, for example by introducing impurity atoms, known as doping. Materials with different types of doping can be combined to manufacture products such as transistors, solar cells or LEDs.

Fla. man sues ex-Elmo puppeteer, claims NY abuse
NEW YORK (AP) ? A Florida man on Tuesday sued a former Elmo puppeteer who resigned amid sex abuse allegations, saying the voice actor met him in New York a dozen years ago after trolling gay telephone chat lines seeking underage boys for sex.
The lawsuit, seeking unspecified damages, was filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan by a man who remains anonymous, making him the third person to make claims against Kevin Clash, who resigned from "Sesame Street" last week after 28 years.
Clash had quickly denied the first claim, which was recanted the next day. But Clash then resigned after a 24-year-old college student, Cecil Singleton, sued him for $5 million, saying the actor engaged in sexual behavior with him when he was 15.
According to the latest lawsuit, a 29-year-old man said he met Clash on a chat line when he was 16 and was exploring modeling opportunities in New York. It said the youth, then in high school, specifically stated on the chat line that his intentions were non-sexual. Still, the lawsuit said, Clash pursued, posing as a 30-year-old man whose name was Craig even though he was a decade older.
After speaking by phone for several days, Clash invited the youth to visit his Manhattan apartment, the lawsuit said.
At the apartment, Clash gave the teenager alcohol, and they engaged in sexual contact, including oral sex, the lawsuit said. While in the apartment, the youth spotted numerous Elmo dolls and photographs of Elmo with famous people such as Beyonce and Tyra Banks but didn't learn Clash's history until he moved to New York after high school at age 18 and engaged in a sexual relationship with him, the lawsuit said.
The youth was a compliant victim and did not become aware he had suffered adverse psychological and emotional effects from the sexual acts until this year, the lawsuit said.
Clash's lawyer, Michael Berger, said in a statement that the federal cases filed against Clash are without merit.
"The cases and Mr. Clash's reputation will be defended vigorously," he said.

'National security risk': Far-right leader pushes Hungary to draw up ...

BUDAPEST,?Hungary?-- A Hungarian far-right politician urged the government to draw up a list of Jews who pose a "national security risk", stirring outrage among Jewish leaders who saw echoes of fascist policies that led to the Holocaust.
Marton Gyongyosi, a leader of Hungary's third-strongest political party Jobbik, said the list was necessary because of heightened tensions following the brief conflict in Gaza and should include members of parliament.
Opponents have condemned frequent anti-Semitic slurs and tough rhetoric against the Roma minority by Gyongyosi's party as populist point scoring ahead of elections in 2014.
Jobbik has never called publicly for lists of Jews.
"I am a Holocaust survivor," said Gusztav Zoltai, executive director of the Hungarian Jewish Congregations' Association. "For people like me this generates raw fear, even though it is clear that this only serves political ends. This is the shame of Europe, the shame of the world."
Between 500,000 and 600,000 Hungarian Jews died in the Holocaust, according to the Holocaust Memorial?Center?in Budapest. According to some accounts, one in three Jews killed in Auschwitz were Hungarian nationals.
Gyongyosi's call came after Foreign Ministry State Secretary Zsolt Nemeth said Budapest favored a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as benefiting both Israelis with Hungarian ancestry, Hungarian Jews and Palestinians in Hungary.
Gyongyosi, who leads Jobbik's foreign policy cabinet, told Parliament: "I know how many people with Hungarian ancestry live in Israel, and how many Israeli Jews live in Hungary," according to a video posted on Jobbik's website late on Monday.
"I think such a conflict makes it timely to tally up people of Jewish ancestry who live here, especially in the Hungarian Parliament and the Hungarian government, who, indeed, pose a national security risk to Hungary."
Gyongyosi apologizes
Gyongyosi, 35, is the son of a diplomat who grew up mostly in the Middle East and Asia -- Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan and India -- and whose office is decorated by Iranian and Turkish souvenirs. He graduated with a degree in business and political science from Trinity College in Dublin in 2000.
He worked for four years at the Dublin office of KPMG, then returned to Budapest in 2005. He has been active in Jobbik since 2006 and became their representative in parliament in 2010.

The government condemned the remarks.
"The government strictly rejects extremist, racist, anti-Semitic voices of any kind and does everything to suppress such voices," the government spokesman's office said.
Laszlo Kover, the Speaker of parliament, who is from the ruling Fidesz party, also issued a statement on Tuesday in which he called for a tightening of house rules that would allow a sanctioning of such behavior.
Gyongyosi tried to play down his comments on Tuesday, saying he was referring to citizens with dual Israeli-Hungarian citizenship.
"I apologize to my Jewish compatriots for my declarations that could be misunderstood," he said on Jobbik's website.
He later told a news conference that he would not resign and considered the matter "closed," national news agency MTI reported.
King maker?
Jobbik's anti-Semitic discourse often evokes a centuries-old blood libel - the accusation that Jews used Christians' blood in religious rituals.
"Jobbik has moved from representing medieval superstition (of the blood libel) to openly Nazi ideologies," wrote Slomo Koves, chief rabbi of the Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation.
Jobbik registered as a political party in 2003, and gained increasing influence as it radicalized gradually, vilifying Jews and the country's 700,000 Roma.
The group gained notoriety after founding the Hungarian Guard, an unarmed vigilante group reminiscent of World War Two-era far-right groups. It entered Parliament at the 2010 elections and holds 44 of 386 seats.
The center-right government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban has struggled to pull Hungary out of recession as many European countries suffer from an economic crisis.
Orban's Fidesz has lost more than a million voters since 2010, even though it is still the strongest political force.
More than half of Hungary's electorate is undecided and having retained its voter base, some analysts say Jobbik could hold the balance of power in the 2014 elections between Fidesz and the fragmented left-wing opposition.

While business at law firms is sagging, everything is coming up roses for in-house lawyers.
A new survey from HBR Consulting shows that pay is on the rise for in-house attorneys.

?We are seeing healthy increases in in-house compensation at all lawyer levels, despite the challenging economic environment,? says Lauren Chung, senior director and survey editor at HBR. "The outlook for the in-house market is positive as law departments continue to keep more work in-house and increase pay for attorneys in corporate law departments."
Salaries are up across the in-house board, with Chief Legal Officers leading the way.
- The average base salary for all attorney levels was $183,800, up 3.4% from 2011.
- Chief legal officers had an average base salary of $521,000, up 5% from last year.
- If you include bonuses, the average total compensation for in-house lawyers across all levels was $314,700, up 2.6% compared with 2011.
The only hitch: Bonuses. They have leveled off some since last year, when HBR charted an average cash bonus spike of 25%.7 between 2010 and 2011.

Gene linked to respiratory distress in babies
ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Some infants are more susceptible to potentially life-threatening breathing problems after birth, and rare, inherited DNA differences may explain why, according to research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
The study is the first to identify a single gene -- ABCA3 -- that is associated with a significant number of cases of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in babies born at or near full term. RDS is the most common respiratory problem in newborns and the most common lung-related cause of death and disease among U.S. infants less than a year old.
Their findings will be published in the December 2012 issue of Pediatrics and are available online.
The research may lead to new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for prevention and treatment to improve respiratory outcomes for babies.
"We found that mutations in ABCA3 account for about 10 percent of respiratory disease in babies born near their due dates," said Jennifer A. Wambach, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics and the study's lead author. "These are babies who we typically think should have mature lungs and breathe normally. While we have known for a while that RDS is a heritable disease, this is the first gene to account for a significant proportion of disease among infants that are full-term or nearly full-term."
RDS occurs when an infant's lungs don't produce enough surfactant, a liquid that coats the inside of the lungs and helps keep them open so the baby can breathe. If there isn't enough surfactant, an infant has to work hard to breathe and may suffer from a lack of oxygen. Premature infants are at especially high risk of RDS, as surfactant production increases as babies near term. However, 2 percent to 3 percent of term and near-term babies also develop RDS.
The researchers' findings suggest a range of possibilities, Wambach said. These include using the genetic knowledge to plan affected infants' births near hospitals with neonatal intensive-care units and developing medical therapies to target the abnormal protein resulting from these mutations.
Wambach said the researchers hope to identify additional genes that cause neonatal RDS and better identify babies at risk.
"But right now we're studying how these mutations function in the laboratory," Wambach said. "Statistical associations help guide us, but we also need to understand the biology of these mutations."
The research team -- including Aaron Hamvas, MD, and F. Sessions Cole, MD -- evaluated five genes known to be important for normal breathing immediately after birth. Hamvas is the James Keating Professor of Pediatrics and medical director of the newborn intensive care unit at St. Louis Children's Hospital. Cole is the Park J. White, MD, Professor of Pediatrics.
The team looked at five genes involved in the metabolism of lung surfactant by taking DNA samples from more than 500 infants of African and European descent, with and without respiratory distress, who were carried to term or near term. They evaluated the same genes in an additional 48 babies with especially severe respiratory distress to see if their findings applied to that group, and in a third group of 1,066 Missouri babies, to determine the frequency of the mutations in a general population.
In comparing babies with and without respiratory distress, they found that babies of European descent with respiratory distress were more likely to have a single mutation in ABCA3, one of the five genes tested, than the infants with no breathing problems. Babies of African descent with respiratory distress also were more likely to have single ABCA3 mutations, but this difference did not reach statistical significance.
More than one-quarter of the babies with especially severe respiratory distress had a single mutation in ABCA3. Infants who inherit two defective copies of the ABCA3 gene usually require lung transplantation for survival. However, this is the first study to show that a single mutation in ABCA3 predisposes infants to respiratory distress that can usually be treated with neonatal intensive care.
The researchers also found that 1.5 percent to 3.6 percent of babies born in Missouri carry a single ABCA3 mutation, leading the researchers to estimate that about 10 percent of RDS cases among term and near-term infants may be attributable to mutations in ABCA3.
"We picked five candidate genes and thought we would find rare mutations in all of the genes," Wambach said. "However, we found very few mutations in the other genes, and they were not associated with RDS. Our findings were really isolated to this one gene, ABCA3."

U.S. declines to name China currency manipulator
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration said on Tuesday that China's currency remained "significantly undervalued," but stopped short of labeling the world's second-biggest economy a currency manipulator.
Although Beijing controls the pace at which the yuan can rise, the U.S. Treasury said in a congressionally mandated semi-annual report that China did not meet the legal requirements to be deemed a currency manipulator.
The label is largely symbolic, but would require Washington to open discussions with Beijing on adjusting the yuan's value.
It has been 18 years since the U.S. Treasury has designated any country a manipulator. China was labeled a manipulator between 1992 and 1994.
The latest report reflected both the administration's desire to maintain good relations with its top creditor and an attempt to keep up pressure for changes in China that could benefit the U.S. economy and mollify domestic critics.
The report noted that the yuan, also known as the renminbi, had risen 12.6 percent against the U.S. dollar in inflation-adjusted terms since June 2010. An official said it was up 9.7 percent on a nominal basis through Tuesday, when it closed at a record high.
The Treasury also said China had "substantially" reduced its intervention in foreign exchange markets since the third quarter of 2011 and had loosened capital controls.
"In light of these developments, Treasury has concluded that the standards ... have not been met with respect to China," it said. "Nonetheless, the available evidence suggests the renminbi remains significantly undervalued," the report added, echoing the Treasury's last assessment in May.
Ted Truman, a Treasury official under former President Bill Clinton, said it was important to keep a watchful eye on China's currency policy.
"We have the aftermath of 10 years of misbehavior," said Truman, who is now with the Peterson Institute for International Economics. "It would probably be unwise and too soon to declare victory."
During the U.S. presidential campaign, Republican candidate Mitt Romney pledged to label China a manipulator on his first day in office to show he would be tougher on the chief U.S. economic competitor than President Barack Obama.
Many U.S. businesses and lawmakers complain that Beijing keeps the value of its currency artificially low to gain an advantage in trade at the expense of American jobs.
But an international consensus is growing that the yuan is closing in on its fair value after about a decade at an artificially weak level. The International Monetary Fund softened its language on the yuan in July.
YUAN AT RECORD HIGH
Signs of a recovery in the Chinese economy and a new round of quantitative easing by the U.S. Federal Reserve have led traders to push the yuan higher.
But China's central bank has kept a lid on the move. The central bank allows the yuan to rise or fall by only 1 percent from whatever rate it sets each day.
Charles Schumer, the No. 3 Democrat in the U.S. Senate and a longtime critic of China's yuan policy, said the Treasury passed up an opportunity to level the trade playing field.
"It's time for the Obama administration to rip off the band-aid, and force China to play by the same rules as all other countries," the New York senator said in a statement.
But the U.S.-China Business Council, which represents U.S. companies that do business with China, applauded the decision.
"The exchange rate has little to do with the U.S. trade balance or employment," council President John Frisbie said. "We need to move on to more important issues with China, such as removing market access barriers and improving intellectual property protection."
The Treasury said further appreciation of the yuan would help China balance its economy toward consumption by giving households greater purchasing power.
It called on China to reduce its "exceptionally high" foreign exchange reserves and publish data about its intervention in currency markets.
The Obama administration also used the currency report to keep pressure on South Korea to limit its foreign exchange intervention.
South Korea says it intervenes to smooth the volatility of its won currency, but it has gone into the market throughout 2012, the Treasury report said. In July, the IMF said the won was undervalued by up to 10 percent.
"We will continue to press the Korean authorities to limit their foreign exchange interventions to the exceptional circumstances of disorderly market conditions," the report said.

MAKING A STATEMENT
Notre Dame is No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 with nothing left to do but wait to find out its opponent for the national championship game.
Toward the bottom of the rankings, there was plenty of movement. Ten Top 25 teams lost this weekend, the most since Oct. 11, 2003, but for the most part the national championship race was unchanged.
No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Georgia, both easy winners in rivalry games Saturday, held their spots in the rankings and probably will do so in the BCS standings when those are released later. They will play for the SEC title in Atlanta next weekend.
The winner is pretty much a lock to move on to Miami for the BCS championship game on Jan. 7, trying to extend the Southeastern Conference's string of six straight titles.
But will the right SEC team be getting a shot? Florida coach Will Muschamp doesn't think so.
"We should be playing for the national championship," he said after the Gators beat Florida State 37-26 in Tallahassee, Fla., on Saturday.
He's got a point.
The Gators (11-1) checked in at No. 4 in the AP poll this week, up one spot.
Their lone loss was to Georgia and it was enough to settle the SEC East in the Bulldogs' favor.
But playing in the same division doesn't mean playing the same competition. Not even close in these days of expanding conferences.
The Gators have clearly played a tougher schedule than the Bulldogs. The Sagarin computer ratings have Florida's strength of schedule at 13th in the nation. Georgia's is 42nd. Alabama's is 39th, by the way, but let's keep the focus on Florida and Georgia because they played each other.
Florida also played No. 9 LSU and No. 10 Texas A&M as its two SEC West opponents, combined record 20-4. Georgia played Auburn and Mississippi from the west, combined record 9-15.
On Saturday, both Florida and Georgia played their toughest nonconference games. The Gators beat Florida State (10-2). The Bulldogs routed Georgia Tech (6-6).
Both teams played No. 11 South Carolina, the East's other beast. Florida beat the Gamecocks 44-11. South Carolina beat Georgia 35-7.
Remember it was Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier who suggested in the preseason that only division records determine division winners after South Carolina was in similar position to Florida last year.
Of course, the Bulldogs can point to the scoreboard, the one that read Georgia 17, Florida 9 in Jacksonville, Fla., back on Oct. 27.
As conferences get bigger, the SEC is up to 14 now, conference standings and championship games lose meaning. Georgia's road to the SEC championship was easier than Florida's. That road gets tougher next week. If Georgia can beat Alabama, it will further validate its place ahead of Florida.
But it's a strange situation and one that will repeat itself around the country as conferences grow and college football implements a four-team playoff in a couple of years.
Georgia and Florida had a race. The Bulldogs won, but the Gators had to cover more ground.

GOING UP
The MAC made a big move.
No. 18 Kent State (11-1) and No. 19 Northern Illinois (11-1) each moved up five spots in the Top 25 after completing perfect Mid-American Conference seasons and setting up a must-see conference championship game for Friday night.
The last time the MAC had two teams ranked in the AP's top 20 was Nov. 5, 1973, when Miami, Ohio, was 17th and Kent State was 19th.
The Golden Flashes and Huskies benefited from a rash of losses by ranked teams. Ten went down, all ranked between No. 10 (Florida State) and No. 25 (Mississippi State, which was tied for 25th last week).
All the losses could put the MAC in position to send a team to the BCS for the first time, but as with most things in Bowl Championship Series, it's not quite as easy as win and you're in.
No. 25 Boise State, which is No. 15th and 17th in the polls used in the BCS standings, is also in the mix for that BCS buster bid ? again.

GOING DOWN
No. 13 Florida State and No. 15 Clemson both dropped three spots, capping an awful day for the Atlantic Coast Conference against the SEC.
The Seminoles' loss to Florida stung badly because FSU still had slim hopes of working into the national championship picture. Instead it's off to the ACC title game to play Georgia Tech with only Orange Bowl hopes.
The Yellow Jackets, Coastal Division champions by default because Miami gave itself a postseason ban, lost 42-10 to Georgia. Georgia Tech is now in BCS or bust mode. If the Jackets lose to Florida State, they will be 6-7.
Clemson's 27-17 loss to South Carolina was maybe even more devastating for the ACC. The Tigers looked like a lock to receive an at-large BCS bid, probably to the Sugar Bowl, had they finished 11-1. At 10-2, with no marquee wins, that's probably not happening.
To top it off Vanderbilt beat Wake Forest 55-21. The final total: SEC 161, ACC 74.

IN AND OUT
The Big East's de facto championship game will be between two unranked teams.
Rutgers and Louisville both lost Saturday to tumble from the rankings ahead of their Thursday night game in New Jersey, which will decide the conference championship.
Rutgers was stomped 27-6 at Pittsburgh and Louisville lost 23-20 at home to Connecticut in double-overtime.
The winner of Louisville-Rutgers still gets a BCS bid, but the Big East's troubles could be a boon to potential BCS busters.
If a conference champion from a non-automatic qualifying league, such as the Mountain West or MAC, finishes in the top 16 of the final BCS standings and is ahead of a champ from an AQ league, that champion receives an automatic bid to the marquee bowl games.
It's all but a lock that the Big East champ will finish behind the MAC champion and possibly Boise State, but even though those teams are close to the BCS top-16, it's no guarantee they get there.
Also moving into the rankings this week was No. 22 Northwestern.

Facebook and volatile market still chill IPOs
Making a killing on initial public offerings used to be easy.
At the peak of the technology boom, little more than a decade ago, a plentiful supply of companies vied to sell stock on the exchanges, and investors were assured mouthwatering returns.
These days, the deals are fewer and the returns more modest.
Companies are set to raise more than $45 billion through IPOs this year ? the most since 2007, according to data provider Dealogic. But if you scratch the surface, there are signs that the market is less healthy than it appears.
Almost a third of the money raised in IPOs this year came from one deal, Facebook's $16 billion offering in May, and the number of companies taking themselves public may end at a three-year low.
The pipeline, or backlog, of companies planning to sell stock is also thinning.
"It's a reflection of the psychology of the market today. It's not strong. It's moderate to weak," says Rob Lutts, chief investment officer at Cabot Money Management in Salem, Mass.
While 437 companies have filed for an IPO this year, 178 have withdrawn or postponed their planned listings, Dealogic data show.
The state of the IPO market matters beyond Wall Street. Besides giving investors the chance to buy into fast-growing parts of the market, offerings give companies the money to expand and hire workers.
Scott Cutler, head of global listings at NYSE Euronext, which runs the New York Stock Exchange, estimates that more than 90 percent of a public company's employee growth comes after it has listed on an exchange.
IPO activity is dictated largely by the health of the overall stock market. Falling markets discouraging companies from going public.
The Standard & Poor's 500 is up 11 percent this year, but the advance has been punctuated by sharp declines when investors fretted about European debt, the election and, now, a looming "cliff" of tax increases and government spending cuts.
"The general market has been real choppy this year. It really has," says Sal Morreale, an institutional salesman at Cantor Fitzgerald in Los Angeles who tracks offerings.
Facebook's calamitous market debut also put the brakes on IPOs.
The social networking site's offering was the most keenly anticipated market debut at least since Google's in 2004. But concerns about revenue from smartphone users spooked investors, and the offering was plagued by technical glitches.
The stock was priced at $38 and fell almost immediately, dropping as low as $17.55 on Sept. 4. The negative publicity helped shutter the IPO market for more than a month until EQT Midstream Partners, an energy company, sold stock June 16. Companies including American Tire Distributors and Crosair, a computer memory company, were among those withdrawing their IPOs.
"That deal has become a textbook case of how not to do a deal," says Quincy Krosby, a market strategist with Newark, N.J.-based Prudential Financial. "That IPO really chastened investors."
The backlog of companies planning IPOs fell to 39 in November, according to data from Ipreo, a market analysis company firm. That is the fewest since August 2009, just after the recession. The tally has been declining steadily since September 2011.
NYSE's Cutler says that much of the decline is because of a law passed in April designed to make it easier for companies to attract funding. They can confidentially notify regulators of their intention to seek a listing.
Cutler says that if the business environment remains stable, the pace of IPO filling will be "slightly up" next year as companies become more familiar with the law.
The law allows companies to avoid disclosing competitively sensitive information and come to the market at much shorter notice. Ultimately, it will encourage more companies to seek listings, Cutler says.
Despite Facebook's high-profile slump, most companies have left something on the table for investors.
The average return for IPOs this year has been 11 percent, according to Dealogic data. That's less than the average 88 percent one-year return that investors garnered in 1999, but roughly in line with the broader market.
Among the best debuts: Guidewire Software, a provider of software for the insurance industry, and Nationstar Mortgage Holdings, a Texas mortgage provider and servicer, according to data from IPO investment advisory firm Renaissance Capital.
Investors that bought Guidewire's stock at $13 at its market debut in January have seen it rise to almost $30, while Nationstar's stock has almost doubled from $14 to $27.35.
There are some advantages to a slow IPO market, says Lutts of Cabot Money Management. When demand is low, only the best companies are able to attract enough demand to list on the exchanges, raising the quality of companies coming to the market. And it can be an indicator that the broader market is oversold and thus offers some bargains.
"When we're frothy, everything is coming at a premium," Lutts says. "I'm interested in equities today because of a weak IPO market."
