AP Interview: UN chief blames rich for warming

DOHA, Qatar (AP) -- Rich countries are to blame for climate change and should take the lead in forging a global climate pact by 2015, a deadline that "must be met," the head of the United Nations said Wednesday.

On the sidelines of international climate talks in Qatar, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said it was "only fair and reasonable that the developed world should bear most of the responsibility" in fighting the gradual warming of the planet.

Ban's comments echoed the concerns of China and other developing countries, which say rich nations have a historical responsibility for global warming because their factories released carbon emissions into the atmosphere long before the climate effects were known.

"The climate change phenomenon has been caused by the industrialization of the developed world," Ban told The Associated Press. "It's only fair and reasonable that the developed world should bear most of the responsibility."

Many rich nations, including the U.S. and European Union, say the firewall between developed and developing countries that has guided the two-decade-old climate process in the past no longer reflects the world today and isn't helpful in dealing with the problem.

Most of the emissions now come from the developing world, and China has overtaken the U.S. to become the world's top carbon polluter.

"Rich countries will need to do more than poor countries, that is clear," European Union climate commissioner Connie Hedegaard told The AP. "But all of us will have to do the maximum we can because otherwise we can't cope with climate change."

How to divide the burden of emissions cuts is at the core of discussions to create a new global climate treaty that would apply to all nations. The only binding pact so far, the Kyoto Protocol, only covers the emissions of industrialized countries.

Last year, governments decided that the new treaty should be adopted in 2015 and enter force five years later. The Doha meeting is supposed to produce a work plan to ensure that the treaty is ready by 2015.

"This deadline must be met. There is no time to waste, no time to lose for us," Ban said.

"Climate change is happening much, much faster than one would understand," he added. "The science has plainly made it clear: it is the human beings' behavior which caused climate change, therefore the solution must come from us."

Ban came to the negotiations in Doha in an attempt to "accelerate the process" of shifting the world to a clean energy pathway, and helping the most vulnerable countries adapt to inevitable warming.

Governments represented at the talks in Qatar are also discussing extending the Kyoto Protocol, which expires this year, as a stopgap measure until the new deal takes effect.

The United States never joined the Kyoto Protocol, partly because it didn't cover emerging economies like China and India. For similar reasons, Canada, New Zealand and Japan don't want to be part of the extension, meaning it would only cover Europe and Australia, who account for less than 15 percent of global emissions.

Nevertheless, Ban said it is "imperative" that the treaty is extended, because it is "the only existing legally binding commitment when it comes to climate change."

Dangerous climate effects could include flooding of coastal cities and island nations, disruptions to agriculture and drinking water, and the spread of diseases and the extinction of species.

A small minority of scientists still question whether the warming seen in recent decades is due to human activities, such as carbon emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. On Tuesday, Ban said it was time to "prove wrong all these doubts on climate change."

Global warming skeptic John Christy of the University of Alabama said Ban's statement was "representative of a religion, not science."

"Science requires questioning (i.e. skepticism) those who wish to stifle debate using arguments from authority (not arguments from evidence)," Christy wrote in an email.

In 2010, a survey of more than 1,000 of the most cited and published climate scientists found that 97 percent of them believe climate change is very likely caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

DNA hydrogel flows like liquid but remembers its original shape

ScienceDaily (Dec. 5, 2012) ? A bit reminiscent of the Terminator T-1000, a new material created by Cornell researchers is so soft that it can flow like a liquid and then, strangely, return to its original shape.

Rather than liquid metal, it is a hydrogel, a mesh of organic molecules with many small empty spaces that can absorb water like a sponge. It qualifies as a "metamaterial" with properties not found in nature and may be the first organic metamaterial with mechanical meta-properties.

Hydrogels have already been considered for use in drug delivery -- the spaces can be filled with drugs that release slowly as the gel biodegrades -- and as frameworks for tissue rebuilding. The ability to form a gel into a desired shape further expands the possibilities. For example, a drug-infused gel could be formed to exactly fit the space inside a wound.

Dan Luo, professor of biological and environmental engineering, and colleagues describe their creation in the Dec. 2 issue of the journal Nature Nanotechnology

The new hydrogel is made of synthetic DNA. In addition to being the stuff genes are made of, DNA can serve as a building block for self-assembling materials. Single strands of DNA will lock onto other single stands that have complementary coding, like tiny organic Legos. By synthesizing DNA with carefully arranged complementary sections Luo's research team previously created short stands that link into shapes such as crosses or Y's, which in turn join at the ends to form meshlike structures to form the first successful all-DNA hydrogel. Trying a new approach, they mixed synthetic DNA with enzymes that cause DNA to self-replicate and to extend itself into long chains, to make a hydrogel without DNA linkages.

"During this process they entangle, and the entanglement produces a 3-D network," Luo said. But the result was not what they expected: The hydrogel they made flows like a liquid, but when placed in water returns to the shape of the container in which it was formed.

"This was not by design," Luo said.

Examination under an electron microscope shows that the material is made up of a mass of tiny spherical "bird's nests" of tangled DNA, about 1 micron (millionth of a meter) in diameter, further entangled to one another by longer DNA chains. It behaves something like a mass of rubber bands glued together: It has an inherent shape, but can be stretched and deformed.

Exactly how this works is "still being investigated," the researchers said, but they theorize that the elastic forces holding the shape are so weak that a combination of surface tension and gravity overcomes them; the gel just sags into a loose blob. But when it is immersed in water, surface tension is nearly zero -- there's water inside and out -- and buoyancy cancels gravity.

To demonstrate the effect, the researchers created hydrogels in molds shaped like the letters D, N and A. Poured out of the molds, the gels became amorphous liquids, but in water they morphed back into the letters. As a possible application, the team created a water-actuated switch. They made a short cylindrical gel infused with metal particles placed in an insulated tube between two electrical contacts. In liquid form the gel reaches both ends of the tube and forms a circuit. When water is added, the gel reverts to its shorter form that will not reach both ends. (The experiment is done with distilled water that does not conduct electricity.)

The DNA used in this work has a random sequence, and only occasional cross-linking was observed, Luo said. By designing the DNA to link in particular ways he hopes to be able to tune the properties of the new hydrogel.

Struggling Nokia sells headquarters building

HELSINKI (AP) ? Nokia Corp. plans to sell its head office near the Finnish capital to real estate investors for ?170 million ($220 million) as the struggling cellphone maker continues to cut costs.

CFO Timo Ihamuotila says the deal, to be concluded later this month, is in line with aims to shed non-core activities, adding that Nokia will continue to operate from the Espoo headquarters "on a long-term basis."

The Finnish company has operated in the glass and steel structure, known as Nokia House, since 1997.

Tuesday's announcement comes amid fierce competition in the smartphone market in which the former No.1 phone maker has been edged out by Samsung Electronics and Apple Inc.'s iPhone. Nokia has announced 10,000 job cuts and is streamlining operations to save ?1.6 billion by the end of 2013.

The saga of Polymer Vision has been defined by optimistic plans braced by second chances when financial reality came crashing in, with no happily ever after or definite end in sight. Unfortunately, there may not be much more of a story to tell. CTO Edzer Huitema claims that Wistron has shut down Polymer Vision entirely: while it's keeping the intellectual property behind the rollable display company it acquired in 2009, it has reportedly dismissed all associated staff after unsuccessful attempts to find a buyer. We've asked Wistron for a more formal confirmation and an explanation, and we'll let you know if there's an update. However, it's possible that Polymer Vision's technology was simply past its prime. As +Plastic Electronics notes, Polymer Vision and the Readius came at a time before mobile tablets and giant smartphones, when it wasn't clear that we would tolerate big screens in our pockets; while flexible displays are still in development, some of Polymer Vision's biggest advantages have faded away.

Effortless Flow: Mind/Body Fitness Report #2

Has it been a week already? It sure doesn't feel like it. These days the posts here are few and far between. Even the previous post, was sort of forced, in that it wasn't really a very pressing topic to share, being neither important or even all that interesting, just another "I may as well post something" type of post, just to keep the wheels moving and the creative juices flowing.

Well anyway, sticking to my promise to give you an update here every Sunday, as mentioned in Mind/Body Fitness Report #1, my current area of study is the brain, and I am now reading my second book on the topic, being a general overview of the latest brain research, since undertaking this new endeavor. Which is really only slightly new, because I've always had an interest in psychology, in understanding mind and consciousness, but just haven't been all that interested in the physical science aspect of it, in terms of biology and chemistry, and in the actual physical organ of the brain and nervous system.

Well, I figured that it might be something worth looking into after all, and have decided to read as much as I can, so long as it doesn't bore me out of mind. I'm kind of a slow learner when it comes to learning technical and scientific material, and topics like biology and physics never much interested me, mostly because its terminology and classification of everything seemed so anti-spiritual and dissociated from real life, where all of life is reduced to mindless matter, and where consciousness and spirit is reduced to the brain, like some kind of meaningless machine without free will and purpose beyond fulfilling one's biological functions.

Well, I think there are mistakes in it, in the way the biology of the body and brain is understood in relation to consciousness, but you cannot make a reasoned argument for or against it, unless you know everything there is about it, the terminology and classification, including everything you disagree with. But either way, I think it's worthwhile for anyone interested in psychology, as well as health and longevity, and metaphysics, and such things as the soul and spirit, would benefit from becoming better acquainted with the latest brain research, even those perspectives that take a more materialistic, atheistic approach. In order to better separate the wheat from the chaff, all perspectives need to be looked at.

So that is what I am doing in my own time. And instead of just reading one or two books on the subject, and then jumping to something else, I'm forcing myself to actually stick with it for awhile, and reading several books about the brain, before jumping around to something else. That is the difference. I learn through repetition, and the truth is, if I read ten books on one topic, I tend to retain the information better than if I read ten books on ten different topics. But the key is retaining interest in the subject, otherwise if you force yourself to read something over a prolonged period of time that you have absolutely no interest in and that you absolutely hate reading, you will tend to tune it out to some extent, and not learn as much as you would if the subject really interested you.

I would say that is the main cause of my scattered reading habits, it's not just a matter of being interested in many different things, it's also a matter of losing interest very quickly. So I'll read one subject, and I'll be like, okay, that was alright, but look at that, that subject is even more interesting, I think I'll read that next. But then I read that, and the same thing happens as before, where you keep jumping around, learning a little bit about a lot of different things, but not really learning a lot about one thing. Which is okay to do to some extent, but sometimes you need to read a few more books on a topic, for it to really get established in your memory, otherwise with all the jumping around you do in your reading habits, there is a good chance that you'll forget much of the essential points of what you read, and it would have all been for nothing.

Reading about the brain, thinking about memory, intelligence, and cognition has got me thinking about my own brain health. Not just mental health, in terms of state of mind and quality of life, but the actual physical, biological health of my brain.

As much as I like to emphasize how healthy and youthful I am, and how despite it being often said that I look at least ten years younger than my actual age (I'm in my 30's but people usually guess that I look like I'm in my early to mid-twenties, and I still get carded when I buy beer), I was wondering if my brain is actually as healthy and youthful as my physical appearance would suggest. Been thinking about my brain fitness, the strength of my memory and concentration and ability to visualize abstract ideas and pictures in my mind, and it is disconcerting to me that I very well may have some cognitive impairment from regular drinking, probably not permanent, but where I am not as sharp and clear-headed as I could be, or like to think I am, if I were completely alcohol-free for a couple months.

It's also unsettling to think that not only may I have some cognitive impairment, in the form of diminished memory and concentration, but also that I may not be as smart as I think I am. That I may have been overestimating my intelligence and creativity, and that instead of being above average, I may very well be at or below average, and not remarkable at all, neither creatively or intellectually.

Of course I will never settle for that, will never accept that diminishing perspective, because doing so would probably destroy my entire confidence in myself as well as all hopes of bettering myself and improving my quality of life. But the point is that my brain may not be functioning at its most optimal level, but the good news is that I think you can do things to improve the health and fitness of your brain, assuming you don't have some underlying neurological disorder that cannot be fixed by mental brain training exercises and nutritional supplementation alone.

Otherwise, if you are a healthy person, whose cognitive decline is due to lack of mental exercise, or from the consumption of drugs and alcohol, a poor diet, and or nutritional deficiencies, there are things you can do to improve your cognitive abilities. It would be in the best interests of anyone who is studying the brain, to not just limit their education to a theoretical perspective of it, that is not just looking at it from the outside as an observer, but of actually becoming a participant by applying specific ideas about how to maximize your brain fitness, and to make the most of your brain, in terms of health and intelligence.

Anyone who studies the brain without working on improving the health and fitness of their own brain, would be missing the entire point.

So the primary message of this Mind/Body Fitness Report #2 is that my current study of the brain is motivated by my interest in improving not only my understanding of the brain, but also improving the health and fitness of my own brain. It all ties into my interests in psychology, spirituality, and metaphysics, as well as my interests in health and longevity.
